Hello Doctor Rail
I have seen young people at Lucerne station with SBB RailFair on their work clothes. What exactly is their job?
Best wishes,
Andrea
Hello Andrea
What you saw were our prevention assistants. They form part of SBB’s security chain. We have a security model which is based on prevention, dissuasion and repression. “Prevention” is covered by the SBB RailFair programme, among other things, as demonstrated by our station “godparents” for example, who are present at the stations. These people are committed volunteers who travellers and passengers can go to if they wish to report misconduct at the station and who are available if any information or assistance is required. Prevention assistants are also present at the stations. They are people who are involved in community service or people looking for work, and are employed by SBB for six months. Prevention assistants follow the motto “look closely instead of turning away” to promote a positive environment on public transport. Their presence at the stations and on regional trains reinforces our passengers’ sense of security. They also help travellers and answer their questions.
“I am here because I think that being a prevention assistant is worthwhile and interesting and because I would like to find out more about SBB”, says Tobias Eckerlin, one of twelve prevention assistants at Lucerne station. His goal as a prevention assistant is “to use my presence to prevent conflict in a targeted way and to maintain order on the trains and ensure understanding among passengers”. Tobias Eckerlin has been a prevention assistant since the start of November. He was trained for his role in a one-week course led by experts from the Swiss Red Cross and SBB. Prevention assistants are also deployed in Ticino and in western Switzerland: eleven prevention assistants have been working in Bellinzona since the beginning of October and, as of November, thirteen are working in Lausanne.
SBB offers three rounds of training beginning in March, September and November each year. If you are interested and are required to carry out community service or are looking for a job, please contact railfair@sbb.ch for further information and the application documents.
Security model: prevention, dissuasion, repression
SBB’s security strategy has been focussing on “prevention, dissuasion and repression” for many years. “Prevention” is covered by the Rail Fair program, among other things, while the train crew and transport police work closely together on the “dissuasion” element. Video surveillance also helps to discourage vandalism and violence. The transport police work together with institutions such as the cantonal police force on “repression”. However, the transport police also play a preventative role, for instance during the pickpocketing awareness campaigns, which were carried out in collaboration with the German Federal Police.
